Paintings

My paintings are drawn from memory: a procession, a theatre, a circus, recalled rather than seen. My strong use of colour and pattern draws on the legacy of hard-edge abstraction (flat, unmodulated colour with clean boundaries between forms, pioneered by Californian painters in the 1950s), here, the forms, however, are not strictly geometric but derived from figures. Each painting evolves through a careful recalibration of lines, shapes and colours until the composition evokes a moment compressed to its essentials. The titles come last.
